We know you will enjoy the personal attention provided by our staff and facilities at the newly refurbished Tambo Jungle Lodge on the shores of the Alto Madre de Dios River.
Our 12 double occupancy bugalows ensure that you are not surrounded by more tourists than animals and this makes for a more relaxing tranquil visit with more opportunity to find the wildlife!. Just enough other travellers to make it interesting but not overbearing. Triple bed accommodation is available on request.
Tambo Jungle Lodge provides ecotourism at its best, working with people from the region to improve their lives, conserving the environment and preserving the rain forest ecosystem
4 Day Program : Please Note: the order of the days may be rearranged as necessary but all sights will be visited unless extreme weather conditions etc make this unsafe.
You will be met at Puerto Maldonado airport by your guide. They will accompany you throughout your stay. We will take a private transfer to our office where you can leave any luggage you do not need. After a look around this typical jungle town we will drive to the port and board a boat for the 40 minute ride down the Madre de Dios river .
On arrival at tour lodge you will be greeted with a welcome cocktail then handed the keys to your bungalow. A wonderful lunch follows then some free time to get comfortable in your bungalow, or take a refreshing dip in our pool.
3:30pm: Our first activity. On this trek you will see a large variety of tropical trees, medicinal plants, insects, butterflies and other animals. We will also stop at a lookout point where you can observe toucans, macaws and other species of birds. (Duration: between 2.5 and 3 hours)
Returning to the lodge you can sit and watch the sunset over the river or have an exotic cocktail in our terrace- bar.
7pm: Before dinner we will go on a boat trip, to try and spot the white caiman (caiman crocodilus) that live on the river banks.
8pm: After a delicious dinner, we can relax and chat in the bar or even in the pool with a drink and sit and marvel at the huge Amazonian sky and at the Southern Cross.
At 5:30am we will trek for 20 min until we arrive at the parrot clay- lick. Here a minimum of five different species feeds on special clay, vital to their metabolism. It’s a truly marvelous, multicolored spectacle.
8am: Breakfast and free time to explore the splendid gardens of the lodge home to dozens of varieties of exotic plants and flowering trees.
10:30am: Again we will take a boat on the Madre de Dios River. This time to “Monkey Island” home to a variety of species of monkeys rescued from captivity or the illegal trade. From here a further 30 min boat ride of and we enter the Tambopata- Candamo National Reserve. We will trek 5km through the dense vegetation of the tropical rainforest, giant trees, snakes, monkeys, birds and even the illusive jaguar can sometimes be observed here
Our destination is Sandoval Lake, home to numerous species of animals, birds (in particular Hoatzins, Kingfisher, and Cormorants) and different species of monkeys (Squirrel monkeys, Howler monkeys, Capuchin monkeys). At the lake itself we can enjoy the spectacle of Giant River Otters, Black Caimans and Piranhas (sometimes we can even observe anacondas in the areas covered by reed). This is also the habitat of the giant Arapaima, a fish of more than 2,5m, weighing in at over 200kg. Traveling by canoe, the sunset over the lake is a unforgettable sight. On our return to the river we may spot some nocturnal animals.
8pm: Time for a well- earned rest after an active day, a delicious dinner and perhaps a drink and a chat in the bar or a chance to lie in our hammocks and listen to the sounds of the rainforest. We also have qualified masseurs available for those who wish.
8am: Breakfast and free time to dip in the pool or maybe buy some Amazon handicrafts and jewelry in our shop.
10am: We follow the river for approximately 1,5 hours in order to visit a native community. Occasionally we can see monkeys, river turtles, caimans and various birds in the dense vegetation of the riverbanks. We will also see some medicinal plants. (Sangre de Grado, Oje, Capirona)
The “Project for the Rescue of Cultural Values” supports the largest local native community “Palma Real” with approximately 200 families of the Ese’eja tribe. This project, located at Gamitada island works with families that will introduce us to their traditional culture, language, customs, clothing and dances. There is also the chance to support them by buying some of their handmade goods.
1pm: Afterwards we visit a chakra (local term for farm) where we get to see and taste a variety of tropical fruits and other local products (Cocoa, bananas, café, cocona). We will also have our lunch here, a typical Amazonian dish.
We return to the lodge and have a few hours before dinner to relax.
After breakfast we say goodbye to our home for the last few days and accompanied by our guide, board the boat back to Puerto Maldonado. We will pass by our office again to collect any baggage you left. Following that we will visit the local market to show you agricultural products of the region before heading to the airport for your flight.
